How to Make Sure That You Get the Right Car Insurance

December 10, 2019 10:06 am Filed to: Featured by Jerry

Owning a car can be an expensive thing, so it’s important to make sure that you know what you are doing, in order for you to get the right priced insurance for your car. You have to get car insurance; however, many people just pick the first insurer they get when they get their new car. Instead, people should make sure that they shop around and look to see what other offers are out there. For example, they might find a better insurance offer using a company like one sure insurance, instead of the first company that they looked to using.

You could decide to go for the bare minimum legal requirement. Or you could decide that you are better off with a fully comprehensive policy that covers damage to your car if you cause an accident. Doesn’t matter how old you are, or how experienced you are, there will always be a car insurance policy that suits you best.

What are the Different Car Insurance Policies?

There are three different levels of cover. The three main types are third party, fire and theft; and fully comprehensive. Third party is the legal minimum for all vehicles for all vehicles that are not registered off the road via a Statutory Off-Road Notice that you must get from the DVLA. This type of cover will only cover other road users (including pedestrians and passengers in your car) if you injure or damage their property. However, you and your car are not covered.

The other type of insurance is third party, fire and theft. This type of cover adds damage to your car (as a result of fire or theft). However, a lot more popular type of cover is fully comprehensive. This is the highest level of insurance. This include damage to your car due to your actions (so even if it your fault you are still covered), you can also provide third party cover for you to drive someone else’s car (if you have permission of course).

What Extras Can You Get with Your Insurance Policy?

Most insurers offer a massive list of extras or add-ons, that you can take as alongside your policy. For example, you might decide that you want to be covered for legal expenses, personal accidents, and the use of a courtesy car. Obviously, if you add these extras to your insurance, then that will up the price. However, it’s a lot better to make sure that you are covered for all these things just in case you need it in the future.

However, that does not mean that you have to get every extra out there. There will be some extras which are more suited for you and your driving. So, make sure you take a look at the extras and see if there is something that suits you best. You should also make sure that you don’t pay double for something that you already have. For example, you might get breakdown covers with your insurance, so you won’t have to add a standalone policy, as you already have it covered.

What Is Car Insurance Excess?

If you do happen to have an accident, then your insurance will cover it (depending on what the accident is and what insurance you have). However, insurance companies won’t want to pay for every little bump and scratch, as this would cost them a fortune. Instead, what they do is insist on drivers paying the first part of any claim. This is normally split into two parts: compulsory and voluntary.

If you decide to increase the excess, then this usually leads to lower premiums. The amount will vary, so if you are unsure then it’s best to double check with your insurance company. Hopefully, these tips will help you when it comes to getting the right insurance for your car. If you are still unsure then you can check out this article here.
